The Local Group dwarf Leo T: HI on the brink of star formation

چکیده
We present Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope (GMRT) and Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) observations of the recently discovered Local Group dwarf galaxy, Leo T. The peak H I column density is measured to be 7× 10 cm, and the total H I mass is 2.8× 10 M⊙, based on a distance of 420 kpc. Leo T has both cold (∼ 500 K) and warm (∼ 6000 K) H I at its core, with a global velocity dispersion of 6.9 km s, from which we derive a dynamical mass within the H I radius of 3.3 × 10 M⊙, and a mass-to-light ratio of greater than 50. We calculate the Jeans mass from the radial profiles of the H I column density and velocity dispersion, and predict that the gas should be globally stable against star formation, especially at radii beyond 50 pc. This finding is inconsistent with the half light radius of Leo T, which extends to 170 pc, and indicates that local conditions must determine where star formation takes place. Leo T is not only the lowest luminosity galaxy with on-going star formation discovered to date, it is also the most dark matter dominated, gas-rich dwarf in the Local Group.

Improved Searches for HI in Three Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies
Previous searches for HI in our Galaxy’s dwarf spheroidal companions have not been complete enough to settle the question of whether or not these galaxies have HI, especially in their outer parts. We present VLA observations of three dwarf spheroidals: Fornax, Leo II, and Draco, all of which have known stellar velocities. The new data show no HI emission or absorption. Column density limits in ...
متن کاملThe Aptly Named Phoenix Dwarf Galaxy
The Local Group galaxy Phoenix has the properties of a dwarf spheroidal galaxy, but an adjacent HI cloud has been recently found to be at the same radial velocity as the stars. The proximity suggests that this cloud is associated with the most recent (≤ 100 Myr) star formation in Phoenix. We have obtained relatively high sensitivity and high resolution HI imaging with the VLA with the goal of d...
متن کاملThe Elusive Old Population of the Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy Leo I.
We report the discovery of a significant old population in the dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy Leo I as a result of a wide-area search with the ESO New Technology Telescope. Studies of the stellar content of Local Group dwarf galaxies have shown the presence of an old stellar population in almost all of the dwarf spheroidal galaxies. The only exception was Leo I, which alone appeared to have del...
متن کاملPulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I
We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...
متن کاملPanoramic View on the Recent Star - Formation Activity in Ic 2574
We present deep imaging of the star-forming dwarf galaxy IC 2574 in the M81 group taken with the Large Binocular Telescope in order to study in detail the recent star-formation history of this galaxy and to constrain the stellar feedback on its HI gas. We identify the star-forming areas in the galaxy by removing a smooth disk component from the optical images. We construct pixel-by-pixel maps o...
